Teenage Mothers Project E.W.

Evalyne Wanjiku, 17, is a teenager mother with a healthy 4 month old baby girl. Both mother and child reside at Serene Haven Rescue Centre in Nyeri County. Evalyne schools at Serene Haven Secondary School, an institution that caters for teen mums and their babies.

Evalyne is an orphan. She is the 2nd born in a family of 5. Evalyne comes from Laikipia County and used to live with her grandmother and siblings before relocating to Serene Haven Rescue Centre. Evalyne would like to be doctor when she grows up. She generally loves playing volleyball.

Evalyne and her baby are Team Members in The Msichana Shujaa Project. This project is a partnership between Kare Foundation and Serene Haven Rescue Centre. Components of the project include teen mums being enabled to go back to school to not only complete their schooling but also pursue their career dreams and secondly, placement of the teen mums and their babies with willing relatives.

The Msichana Shujaa Project offers secondary school education scholarship and thereafter tertiary education. It also offers upkeep for the teen mum and her child, psycho-social support like counseling services, medical care, spiritual nourishment and other professional services all geared towards empowering the Team Members. Psycho-social support was in answer to society stigma towards girls giving birth when perceived to be young or under unclear circumstances.

James 1:27

Pure and unblemished religion [as it is expressed in outward acts] in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit and look after the fatherless and the widows in their distress, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the [secular] world
